Hi, I’m Sam.
My love of the written word started young. I can still remember the wonder of the very first time I entered the magical world of a young boy and his talking horse.
Every book I read became a new world, every character a new friend. My imagination was given wings to fly.
As I grew older I collected books, snippets, quotes, stories, scribbles, and images of the things I was curious about. And of course… writing. I lived and breathed the worlds of fictional characters. If I didn’t like how a book ended, I’d change it. It would play out like a movie in my head until I was satisfied with the ending.
The Simple Wordsmith’s mission:
Writing should be simple and fun for everyone.
Core Values
-
Faith is a gift from God. It’s something that helps me believe in Him and His goodness, especially during difficult times.
It's a combination of trust, belief, and action. Faith is being sure of what I hope for and certain of what I do not see.
-
Family are the ones who care for me the most. They are there to celebrate my successes and a light to guide me through tough the times. I keep my words kid friendly and free from foul language.
-
Fun is anything that makes you feel happy, excited, and full of joy. It's the things we do that make us laugh, smile, and enjoy life. Whether it's playing a game, spending time with family and friends, or trying something new, fun is all about having a good time and feeling great. Because what is life without it?
-
I'll tell you the truth, be sincere and honest 100% of the time. It's part of who I am. (I'll never ask you to do anything illegal, unethical, or immoral.)
-
I believe in the ability to create, innovate, and solve problems by envisioning scenarios, ideas, or objects that may not exist (yet) in reality.
Think of your favorite book, story or fictional character you relate to the most...
Don't all stories start there? -
Something that is easy to understand or do, does not involve complicated processes or fine details.
Keep It Simple means I can explain it to a 10-year-old and they can follow the instructions to complete it.
(For example, a chocolate chip cookie recipe is straightforward and doesn't take much effort to get them to turn out right.)
I can still remember the day I was in class and my English teacher said “you can’t write like that…it’s plagiarizing.” My fledgling writing spirit was crushed. I’d spent a lot of hard work to get my paper this far. I argued with the teacher, got a detention, then a failed assignment.
Mind you, these were the days before the internet. When research was done from the school’s encyclopedias, books, and the actual library. Sometimes it’d take weeks to do research. You’d have to go to the library, find books, check out said books, read them, take notes by hand, then summarize your findings in your own words for it to count.
What I didn’t know then, was that I had a secret skill no one else did… it’s called distilling or synthesizing. When you take complicated language, or large amounts of text, and translate it into plain language that’s simple and easy to understand.
For example this confusing paragraph –
“For many women, a one-day test is enough to get a picture of their hormones. However, sometimes a complete map of your cycle is needed to identify how hormones fluctuate. Determining how your hormone fluctuations compare to this optimal pattern can shed light on cycle-related health concerns.”
Now becomes:
“Why cycle mapping? Because a single day of your period can’t help your provider see the whole picture. For most women, a one-day test is enough to get a complete picture. For others, a complete 25-day map of your cycle helps discover when your hormones fluctuate.”
Or this phrase:
“Elevations that require an architect,” becomes “blueprints for your contractor to build your house from.”
Long story short, my English teacher was wrong.
Writing is my superpower.
To this day, my favorite punctuation mark is still the ellipsis. (There’s something wonderful and mysterious about it.) Just because it leaves you hanging…
